Hi! I’m Joy!

I am not sure what I did before there was YouTube and Google, because I am always searching for solutions to problems or looking for things to improve my life, health, skin, you name it. Just like life, there were some epic fails, some wonderful wins, and some things in between. Through all this trial and error (and sweat and tears in some cases), I have learned that there is value in knowing what works and what doesn’t.

I work with women who are struggling to find peace in a world that doesn’t support them and often undermines their well-being. Unsupportive work, social, and/or family environments are taking a toll on their self-esteem and confidence. Their stress and anxiety have become unmanageable.

Like the women I work with, I have experienced self-doubt, anxiety, and perfectionism. I was often in professional and educational spaces where I was the only Black woman in the classroom, department, organization, etc. I constantly felt the pressure to be “perfect,” be the “best” at whatever I was doing, and prove myself to others. Through my own therapy and personal development work, I have learned to claim my peace even when I am in environments that are not supportive and undermine my efforts.

When I need a reminder of the importance of creating a life that supports and nurtures me, I refer to a quote by author and activist, Audre Lorde. The quote states that taking time to care for yourself and your mental wellness “…is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation…”.
